As per the Government's plan to scale-up Anti Retroviral Treatment (ART) services in the country, two new ART service centres were opened in Tanahun and Dailekh in 2010, bringing the total number of ART service centres to 23, out of which 21 are run by the Government and 2 are run by NGOs.

With the opening of new ART service centres in Tanahun and Dailekh, it is hoped that the work load in the Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara and the Midwest Regional Hospital in Surkhet will be reduced. Also, the People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Tanahun, Dailekh and the adjoining districts will have easier access to health services.

“The establishment of an ART service centre in Tanahun has definitely reduced the work load. 97 clients have now been transferred to the Tanahun ART center” says nurse Kalpana at the Western Regional Hospital.
She further added, “Before the opening of the ART centre, the PLHIVs had to travel all the way to Pokhara to collect their ART drugs and receive counselling services. This at times was also hindered by frequent strikes and closures called by various political parties.”

The ART service centres in Tanahun and Dailekh are financially supported by UNDP with support from Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).
These ART services include counselling and testing, treatment for opportunistic infections, home-based care and tuberculosis treatment referrals.

As part of the consolidated effort, the 12 NGOs supported by DFID via UNDP have been providing palliative care support and transportation service to PLHIV who are receiving ART.

UNDP in early December 2009 through the National Centre for AIDS & STD Control (NCASC) in Kathmandu, provided antiretroviral drugs, supported the renovation of ART clinics to handle treatment functions and provided logistical support. The hospital staffs were trained on HIV clinical care, HIV counseling & testing,
HIV testing, STI case management, recording and reporting and logistics Management. The ART clinics were also provided with National ART Guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures on HIV Case Management and the National Opportunistic Infection Guidelines.
