Short Narratives - Goal by Goal

Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger Poverty Achieve Universal Primary Education Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women Reduce Child Mortality Improve Maternal Health Combat HIV and AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases Ensure Environmental Sustainability Global Partnership for Development

Goal 1 / Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger

Poverty - Target likely to be achieved

Urbanisation, remittances, and higher wages have resulted in a decline of poverty incidence from 42 to 31 percent since the mid-nineties and a further decline is likely. However, the gains for the most excluded groups have been modest and inequality has grown. While on average poverty incidence decreased by 26% from 1996 to 2004, for example, for high caste groups it decreased by 46 percent, but for Muslims only by 6 percent. In the past ten years the Gini-coefficient increased from 0.34 to 0.47 indicating that the gap between the rich and the poor grew further. Nepal has the highest Gini-coefficient in Asia.

Hunger - Target unlikely to be achieved

49 percent of Nepalese children under five are chronically malnourished (stunted). This figure is within the top five in the world. Although there has been some development on the hunger indicators in the past, the recent rapid rise in food prices and the consequences of climate change pose the main challenges in achieving the target. The limited growth in agricultural output needs to be addressed through increased irrigation facilities, improved market access and better use of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, as well as giving due attention to climate change and deforestation.
