SL 5.2 Development planning, implementation and HIV/AIDS responses

Nepal has developed a "National Strategy on HIV/AIDS, 2006 - 2011". The National strategy is the overarching framework to guide, monitor and coordinate an expanded response to the epidemic in Nepal.

UNDP is implementing comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and care programmes remaining under the overarching frame of the National Strategy. The comprehensive programme for each target population includes behaviour change communication, peer education, outreach activities, community sensitisation and advocacy, drop-in-centre, voluntary counselling and testing services or referral and STI treatment services. Moreover, UNDP is also supporting the capacity building of HIV/AIDS & STI Control Board.

On November 7th, 2008 UNDP Nepal and The Global Fund signed the contract to implement some of the components of the round 7 HIV/AIDS grant.

Out of the total approved amount UNDP Nepal will be managing $6,734,717 for the period of two years. The grant start date is 16th November 2008 and the end date is set as 15th November 2010. After 2010 UNDP Nepal is committed to hand over the programme to the government entity.

UNDP Nepal will be focusing on building capacity of the government and the civil society to manage and implement HIV/AIDS activities; expanding access and coverage of quality HIV testing and counselling, and STI diagnosis and treatment; and strengthening health service capacity to provide quality care and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS.
