Convention on the Rights of the Child
But a constitution could say much more than Nepal's Constitutions have done this about children. Nepal has agreed with other countries in the world about the Rights of the Child. The Convention on the Rights of the Child gives many rights to children. The things it mentions include the rights of children to:
- Be with their family if possible
- Express opinions on matters that concern them
- Freedom to express views generally
- Freedom to associate with other people
- Be cared for
- Health and education
- Privacy
- Information
There are provisions for handicapped children and refugees, minority children and children accused of crimes, among other children in special positions. You will see that some of these have been put into the Interim Constitution.
Nepal has undertaken to make regular reports on the protection of the rights of the child in the country. That report goes to a special United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. You can read the most recent of those reports here.
